Internships

Paid vs. unpaid
Internships can be paid through stipends or hourly rates. There are also unpaid internships when a student works for the employer for the experience and does not get paid.
Credit vs. non-credit
Usually if credits are attached to an internship, the institution will require documentation to support the value of the internship to the student and whether the student adequately performed on the job.
Non-credit internships are also frequently offered. A student recognizes the importance of gaining real-life work experience and takes the initiative to secure a position.
Full-time vs. part-time
Typically internships can be full-time during the summer or a semester break and part-time during the academic school year. Full-time internships require students to work 35-40 hours per week, while part-time internships generally are from 10-20 hours per week.
Some students have the ability to attend class and continue to work part-time. Other students may attend class in the evening, permitting them to work full-time during the day. Co-op plans tend to place students in full-time employment opportunities during a semester. Students will then return to school full-time for the following semester.
